Funeral procession was allowed assuming leaders would prevent untoward incidents: Alok Mohan

Alok Mohan

The chief of police (law and order), Alok Mohan, said Wednesday that there was no intelligence failure to predict the launch of stones in the city of Bc. Road on Saturday and in fact, police thought leaders in Sharath's funeral procession would avoid unpleasant incidents.

When asked if the police had come to the conclusion that those in the procession began throwing stones, he clarified that the investigation was still ongoing and that police are verifying all visual recordings. Cases were filed against some leaders who should have ensured order in the procession, Mohan said.

Speaking to reporters here after reviewing the situation of law and order in Bantwal taluk, Mr. Mohan answered a question about allowing the funeral procession during a tense situation and when the prohibition orders were in force. When asked about the BJP's allegations that the police have been attacking the Sangh Parivar leaders by reserving cases against them to silence them, Mr. Mohan said that the charges would be filed only after a thorough investigation.

He also said that if there was a police ruling in anticipating or slowing down problems, action would be taken against the officials involved.

Regarding the delay in the detention of Sharath's aggressors, Mr. Mohan said that the police have definite clues and that he would be arrested soon. Each case was different and required its own time frame to reach a conclusion; Some cases are detected in a couple of days and others could take months, he said.

He is not guilty. He is not guilty. He is not guilty. He is not guilty.

Meanwhile, he has sent out a strong message to rumor mongers in the social media saying that the police would act against those spreading false information, particularly with regard to any crime. Bantwal is peaceful after Saturday's incident due to cooperation from the general public, he said. Mr. Mohan justified the continuation of prohibitory orders imposed under Section 144 of Cr.PC in the rest of Dakshina Kannada except Mangaluru City Police Commissioner limits. It is to ensure that there was no further trouble. Prohibitory orders would not affect normal life, I have added. Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) P. Harishekaran, Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh and Superintendent of Police C.H. Sudheer Kumar Reddy were present.
