"The attack previously on the (DC) and the (AC) throughout raid on illegal sand mining was a very severe issue. This situation shouldn’t have occurred in an educated district like Udupi," said (ADGP) Alok Mohan.
He was responding to a subject on the attack on deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis and assistant commissioner Shilpa Nag during the raid on illegal sand mining units in service in Kundapur taluk, in a press meet on Monday, April 3.
"The DC was believed to inform task force committee members like SP, RTO, tahsildar, ZP CEO and much more. As the DC and AC tried to do it on their own, the violent crowd attacked them. The accused will be punished," he added.
To a problem on political power or force on police in the case, ADGP Mohan said, "We are government officials, but the law does not distinguish on caste, society or political affairs."
DC Priyanka Mary Francis said, "We have learned a lesson. Next time we will go with all defensive measures. A gathering of the task force committee members has been called and we will take sturdy action. We feared that the information concerning the raid would be leaked through other task force members. If we had taken preventive measures, we would have been better ready to face the state of affairs.
"Any task force associate can register a grievance willingly against illegal activities without informing any other member. Action will be taken soon after the misdemeanor," she added.
Superintendent of police of Udupi district K T Balakrishna said, "We are managing the case effectively. Seven have been under arrest and there are six people more who were concerned in the act, according to DC."
