Intensified action against sand mafia: Alok Mohan
Alok Mohan
Alok
Mohan, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), said Monday that
police would take a more intense action against the sand mafia in the Udupi
district.
Speaking
to the pressurists after holding a review meeting of police officers at the
District Police Office, Mohan said police had taken a serious note of the
aggression and attempted to assassinate Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis,
Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Nag and Accountant Kantharaj, when they raided a
sand extraction site in Kandlur near Kundapur.
The
police had detained seven people in this regard. As soon as Police
Superintendent K.T. Balakrishna received the information about the incident,
sent a team of police to the area.
To
a question, she said that although Ms. Francis might have taken the police with
her, she decided to make a timely visit as a good Deputy Commissioner and
District Magistrate.
People
in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts normally respected officials.
Therefore, there were no problems in the village of Halnadu, where Mrs. Francis
had assaulted a sand extraction site. But it was in Kandlur that the incident
of attempted murder occurred. The police had taken this matter seriously, he
said.
As
for other police measures, it had been decided to improve the system of
expirations by having the police chiefs and police officers take care of the
designated areas in the district.
Therefore,
the number of blows at any police station would be equal to the number of
police officers and police that had. This would help the police to develop a
close relationship with people and improve community policing.
Thereafter,
the police would reserve those involved in gambling and illegal sand extraction
under the Goonda Act.
Drop
boxes would be kept in schools and colleges so that students could file their
grievances without writing their names.
Police
officers had been instructed to go to schools and colleges and interact with
students to stay away from drugs, Mohan said.
Present
were Mr. Balakrishna (Superintendent of Police) and N. Vishnuvardhana,
Superintendent of Police.
